Day Two: Sexy Type and Robots


After being thrown off by both the time change from Colorado to Texas and then the subsequent change for daylight savings, I’m surprised how awake I feel!  (Although I can feel a nap coming up.)  I’ve already attended one event today, called The New Web Typography with Jason Cranford Teague, a web designer who created the first online-only magazine back in 1996, helped launch WebMD fifteen years ago, and created one of the first online comic book readers ten years ago.


The main thing Jason talked about was making web typography “sexy.”  We’re used to sexy type in print design, but it almost never occurs in web, due to technology limitations and simply the fact that people have gotten used to certain font sizes and styles.  According to Jason, web text should follow some very simple rules:

    • It should grab your attention.
    • Entice you to engage.
    • Keep your attention.
    • Give you something to remember.

We’ve gotten so obsessed with ease of readability on the web that we forget that sometimes things that are harder to read or more of a challenge to decipher (contrasting colors, sizes, widths) are oftentimes much easier for us to remember and retain afterwards.  “When people find something easy to read, they take it as a sign that they’ve mastered it.”  Think of it as a speed bump that’s slowing readers down and creating “friction” to increase retention.

Web type should be just as interesting as print design!



Oh man!  I haven’t had much of a chance to relax today (and I’m feeling significantly less awake now).  After the typography panel, I attended Coding on Camera: Mr Robot and Authenticity on TV with Sam Esmail, Rami Malek, Christian Slater and Creating a Meaningful Dialogue Through Video with Jeff Hurlow and Paul Trillo.

The panel I found the most interesting was definitely the Mr Robot panel, if only because I’m a huge fan of the show.  Even as a motion and digital designer, what they talked about (focusing on characters and not dumbing down subjects for the audience) really spoke to me.

Additionally, the panel about dialogue and video was also extremely helpful as a motion designer.  Engaging your audience is a vital step to every project, and learning about it through the brand director of Vimeo was a great way to do it.
